The two main causes of LBW in Namibia are preterm pre-labour rupture of membranes (PPROM) and hypertensive conditions in pregnancy particularly pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. PPROM can be either the result or the cause of an inflammatory reaction which in turn leads to production of prostaglandins. The prostaglandins then initiate uterine contractions and eventually delivery.
