Controlled clinical trial studies evaluating IMT effects on cardiovascular function were included in the systematic review.
The trials evaluating IMT effects on blood pressure and autonomic modulation, without population restriction. The eligibility criteria to select studies were: i) the primary objective was related to the effects of IMT on the cardiovascular autonomic nervous system, arterial blood pressure, and heart rate, and ii) randomized clinical trials. Exclusion criteria were non-randomized trials and articles addressing other breathing exercise modalities (yoga, slow and fast breathing, expiratory muscle training).
