Curcumin is an orange-yellow component of turmeric (Curcuma longa), a spice often found in curry powder. In recent years, considerable interest has been focused on curcumin due to treat a wide variety of disorders without any side effects. The structure of curcumin (C21H20O6) was first described in 1913 by Lampe and Milobedeska and shown to be diferuloylmethane. Turmeric is used as a dietary spice, coloring agent in foods and textiles and a treatment for a wide variety of ailments. It is believed that curcumin is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Practitioners of traditional Indian medicine believe that curcumin powder is beneficial against many diseases including biliary disorders, anorexia, coughs, diabetes, hepatic disorders, rheumatism, sinusitis, cancer, and Alzheimer disease.
