Studies of the role of obesity dynamics in AF highlighted the impact of early-onset obesity on AF risk throughout adulthood as well as the cumulative effect of obesity. The multivariate-adjusted HR was 1.2 and 1.6 for a mean BMI of 25.0–29.9 kg/m2 and ≥30 kg/m2, respectively, compared to a BMI of 18.5–24.9 kg/m2. The association between mean BMI and AF risk was slightly attenuated after the adjustment for recent BMI; however, current BMI was not strongly associated with AF risk after the adjustment for mean BMI early in life, which suggests that obesity in early life should be prioritized over current weight status when assessing its impact on AF.
